"Dragon's Tooth" written by Peter Laird,watercolor,1993

This is a watercolor from "Dragon's Tooth" written by Peter Laird. Alia, our heroine, enters the
creepy cave to confront the dragon who has been acting quite eradically lately. I wanted to show
that she is now having second thoughts about her venture. The best part about doing this picture
was I had to design an outfit for this very "modern" sort of girl eventhough she was in such a
"fairy tale" type story. She goes against type by having short hair and wearing britches instead
of some flowing dress and long hair tied in braids. I wanted something historically accurate but
the fashion books & costume books of the past usually consisted of only skirts and dresses for
girls and women. Pants are a recent phenomenon in the history of women's fashion. I decided
to mutate some of the male fashions of long ago with more flowing lines such as her blouse.
Ribbons in her hair give the same effect of movement in the illustrations as long hair would.
