Hello, and welcome to my portfolio page at Altered Earth Arts! As
you can see, I am an illustrator and a fine artist. My husband and I are
both artists and we have two girls. I graduated from Fairfield University
in Fairfield,CT as a Fine Arts major and from there went on to be a commercial
artist. Seven years were spent at the U.S. Army Intelligence School at Fort
Devens, MA where I designed books for the Army and illustrated them. At
that job, I learned all aspects of the publishing process from the initial
editing phase all the way through to the actual production of mechanicals
for printing, of course, we had no computers and had to do things the hard
way. In 1984, I left to run my own art school in the Boston,MA area in a
town called Stoneham. At the school, we taught all methods of fine art from
painting to sculpture.
In 1988, we made a move from Hudson,NH to Chicopee,MA. Unfortunately, I
had to sell my art school as the commute was too far. Upon our arrival in
Chicopee,MA, we set up a comics store and we continued to freelance. Some
of the commercial jobs I did at the time were for the Easton Press in Norwalk,CT.
These jobs involved illustrating several novels with varied topics from
Science Fiction to Thornton Wilder. You can view these pieces in my portfolio.
Also, I produced a limited edition of art prints of a whimsical nature featuring
cats, castles, and moons, etc. These are available through the company store
at Altered Earth. These came about mainly because I would travel with my
husband, A.C.Farley, to many SF conventions where he was exhibiting his
illustration work for SF novels. They always have print shops at these events
so I decided it would be fun to sell something while at the convention.
Luckily, they were a big success. It was also at this time that I produced
many watercolor paintings of a fantasy nature such as "The Princess
and The Dragon".
My biggest project to date is the illustrations I am painting for the book
"Dragon's Tooth" written by Peter Laird. This project will
hopefully be finished soon. I've been painting the pictures and designing
the book in between computer coloring jobs for comics and the Merriam
Webster 10th Edition color dictionary for Reader's Digest. Some of the
paintings are here for viewing in my portfolio and they are all watercolors.
In 1998, I started my new art school in Chicopee, MA. It is called "The
Art Studio". I teach adults and children painting, drawing and sculpture.
Since starting the new school, I have gone back to painting in oils again
along with watercolor. I got into watercolor when I was running my art school
in Stoneham, MA since that was the media many students wished to learn.
It also was more convenient for me having small children running around
to get up and leave things and come back later - sometimes much later! Arches
watercolor paper is my favorite although much of "Dragon's Tooth"
was done on Whatman's. Recently, I started using Winsor Newton watercolor
paper and it is quite nice. You can manipulate the surface quite a lot.Winsor
Newton watercolor is the paint I use exclusively for my watercolors and
oils.
So, please take a moment to go through the portfolio and if you have any
